Mint Museum of Art
Founded in 1933 and opened to the public in 1936, the Mint Museum of Art is North Carolina's oldest art museum. The museum name reflects its original use of the first branch of the United States Mint in Philadelphia. The original building, completed in 1836, was located in uptown Charlotte and operated as a mint until the Civil War. It was then used as a Confederate Headquarters and hospital, and later as an assay office. In 1933, when adjacent construction and expansion threatened its existence, the building was bought by a group of preservationists for $950.00 and moved to the current site. The present facility is a result of two expansions of the original building.
Take a walk through the cultures and artistic expressions of the Americas in the Mint Museum of Art's permanent collection. With a focus on art in the Americas, including influential art from other cultures, the Mint provides a unique perspective that spans from pre-Columbian through Colonial America to the present day. It is a view of the Americas that opens windows to other cultures and times.

You'll see American paintings and decorative arts, African art, North Carolina pottery and one of the country's most extensive displays of European ceramics and pre-Columbian art.

The Mint Museum of Art is a feast for the eyes, mind and soul.

Fifty-eight masterpieces from one of the nation´s most celebrated collections of European art are featured from The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore.
